CapCut vs. Runway: Which AI Video Tool Should You Actually Use?

These two tools get compared constantly, but they’re not really competing for the same job. Understanding the difference will save you from picking the wrong one — and from being disappointed when it doesn’t do what you expected.

They solve fundamentally different problems. CapCut is a full video editor with AI features layered on top — you bring footage you already shot, and CapCut helps you trim, caption, layer, and export it, especially for vertical/social formats. Runway is the opposite: a generation engine first — you describe a scene in text, or feed it a still image, and it produces motion and footage that never existed before. Editing is CapCut’s core strength; generating is Runway’s.

If you have footage and need it finished — choose CapCut. CapCut’s center of gravity is the timeline: trimming, layering, captions, templates, vertical export. Its AI helpers (auto-captions, background removal, upscaling, and increasingly text-to-video generation) sit on top of that core editing workflow rather than replacing it. For creators who film content and need to quickly turn it into a polished, published clip, this is the faster and more complete path.

    CapCut vs Runway

If you need footage that was never filmed — choose Runway. Built around its generative video model, Runway lets you produce entirely new motion from a text description or a still image — useful for concept visuals, creative b-roll, or content where filming real footage isn’t practical or possible. Its trade-off is that once a clip is generated, reshaping it within Runway is comparatively limited — many creators generate in Runway, then move the output into a traditional editor to finish it.

Cost and accessibility. CapCut offers a genuinely usable free tier alongside paid plans, and works across mobile, desktop, and web — a major factor in its position as the most widely used AI video editor by user count. Runway’s generation-focused model typically involves credit-based or subscription pricing tied to how much footage you generate, which can add up faster for heavy users than a flat-fee editing tool.

A workflow many creators actually use: both, together. Rather than treating this as an either/or choice, a common 2026 workflow is generating specific footage or visual elements in Runway, then bringing that output into CapCut (or another timeline editor) to trim, caption, and finish the full piece — using each tool for what it’s actually built to do.

The one-line verdict: pick CapCut when you have footage and need it finished; pick Runway when you need footage that was never filmed in the first place. They’re rarely a true substitute for each other.

Pricing and features for AI software change frequently — verify current details on each product’s official site before making a purchase decision.
