The Best Lisbon Itinerary for First-Timers (3 Days)

Lisbon has become one of Western Europe’s best-value capital cities — walkable, affordable, and packed with enough character to fill several days without ever feeling rushed. Here’s a realistic three-day itinerary for a first visit.

Day 1: Alfama and the historic core

Start in Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood — a maze of narrow, hilly streets that survived the 1755 earthquake largely intact. Wander without a strict plan here; getting mildly lost is part of the experience. Visit São Jorge Castle in the late morning for sweeping views over the city and the Tagus River, then head down toward the Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa) on your way to lunch.

In the afternoon, ride Tram 28 — Lisbon’s iconic yellow tram — through the historic center, a genuinely useful way to cover ground on Alfama’s steep hills without exhausting yourself on your first day. End the day in the Chiado and Bairro Alto areas for dinner and an early evening drink; Bairro Alto gets livelier after dark if you want to extend the night.

Day 2: Belém and Lisbon’s Age of Exploration history

Dedicate a morning to Belém, a district a short tram or bus ride from the center that houses Lisbon’s most significant historical landmarks: the Jerónimos Monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the Belém Tower, both dating to Portugal’s Age of Exploration. Budget a few hours here, as both sites reward unhurried exploration.

No visit to Belém is complete without stopping at Pastéis de Belém for the original custard tart (pastel de nata) — expect a line, but it moves quickly and is worth the short wait for the genuine original recipe.

In the afternoon, head back toward the center and explore the LX Factory, a converted industrial complex turned creative hub with shops, street art, and cafes — a good contrast to the morning’s historical sites.

Day 3: Day trip to Sintra (or a slower city day)

Sintra, a fairytale-like town in the hills roughly 40 minutes from Lisbon by train, is one of the most popular day trips from the city — home to the colorful Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle. If you go, arrive early (Sintra gets crowded by mid-morning) and budget a full day rather than trying to combine it with anything else.

If a day trip feels like too much after two active days, an alternative third day: explore Príncipe Real and Estrela, quieter, more residential neighborhoods with good cafes, the National Pantheon, and Estrela Garden — a more relaxed, less touristed pace to close out the trip.

    Practical tips for first-timers:

    • Lisbon is genuinely walkable, but hilly — comfortable shoes matter more here than in most European capitals
    • Public transport (trams, metro, buses) is affordable and covers the city well if the hills wear you down
    • Restaurants tend to serve dinner later than many visitors expect (8pm+ is normal) — book ahead for popular spots, especially in Bairro Alto and Chiado
    • Lisbon’s affordability (relative to Western European peers like Paris or London) makes it a strong choice for first-time visitors on a moderate budget without sacrificing the “major European capital” experience
